- I am unable to login, what is my password?
If you are using Internet Explorer, the entries are case-sensitive, so make sure that you are entering the user ID and password in all lower-case letters. If you forget your password, please click here to retrieve your online account.
The most common cause of login problems is that either cookies or Java are turned off in the browser. Make sure your browser is set to accept cookies and that Java (and ActiveX) is enabled. If you are having problems logging on with Internet Explorer, try logging on with Netscape or Firefox. The problem is usually a browser setting, so using a different browser generally allows you to get logged in. On occasion, it will help to empty your browser's cache (temporary files) or exit your browser and restart it before attempting to login again. Sometimes when a bad login is attempted, the browser keeps re-using the bad password even though you enter the correct one. Emptying the cache or restarting the browser can sometimes make the browser use the newly-entered password.
- A message says the server is down or not responding.
This message is usually incorrect. If you get this after attempting to login, it means that there is a problem in your browser settings. Make sure that your browser is set to allow cookies and that Java is enabled. If you get this message before you are able to get to the website, stop the browser and re-enter the address in the browser window. If you get the message again, make sure that you still have an Internet connection. Try going to another website such as http://www.google.com or http://www.msn.com to make sure that you still have Internet access. If you cannot get to one of these sites, then you will need to reconnect to the Internet. Try going to the CSUDH campus main website http://www.csudh.edu. If you can get to off-campus sites but cannot get to the campus site, it means that the CSUDH campus Internet connection is down. If you can get to the on-campus site, empty your browser's cache, and try to access the website again.
- A login/password prompt comes up after clicking a link to a document.
There are two popular causes of this problem. It can be caused by Office 2000 when opening Office documents or it can be caused by download assistant programs (such as NetZip). If the problem is Office 2000, just click the Cancel button and you should be able to open the document. If it does not open, go back to the page and click the document again. Click Cancel again if you get the login prompt. Generally it will open on the second try if it did not open on the first. If you still have a problem, hold your mouse over the link and click the right mouse button. From the popup menu select Save Link As or Save Target As and save the file to your local disk drive. Then open the document from your local disk drive. If you have Office 2000, this is a known problem with Word 2000, Excel 2000, and PowerPoint 2000.
See this link for information about the problem:
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q225/2/34.asp
The above link instructs you to download an Office 2000 Service Release (patch/fix). In our tests this gets rid of the login prompt when you open the document. However, when you click the Back button to go back to the original page you start getting a login prompt on the way back to the prior page. Just click Cancel to get back. (Look at your task bar to see if there is a network login prompt that you are not aware of. Sometimes the login prompt gets hidden behind browser windows and is not seen.) If the problem is a download assistant such as NetZip, then you must disable the program while accessing course files. This kind of download assistant may cause password prompts and on occasion it may even try to dialup an Internet connection. The problem is most noticeable when accessing Adobe Acrobat PDF files. In some cases (not all), you can bypass the problem by right-clicking the link to the problematic file and then choosing "Save As" or "Save Target As", depending on your browser version. Either disabling or removing the download assistant program will most often give the best results.
- When I click on a link to open a document, it displays as garbage.
In order to open a document, you must have the correct software to view the document. Microsoft Office documents require Office 97 or above. If you have earlier versions of Microsoft Office, documents will open but will display a lot of garbage characters as well. If your word processor or spreadsheet cannot open the Microsoft Office documents, download versions of the Word 2000, Excel 2000, or PowerPoint 2000 Viewers from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/search.asp?. If you are having trouble opening an Adobe Acrobat PDF file, download the Adobe Acrobat reader from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep.html. In order to playback a Real Audio or Real Video clip, several players may be able to play the media streams. If your player is not able to play the Real Media stream, download the Real Player from http://www.real.com/player/index.html. Make sure you click on a link to download one of the free versions. There are many links to get to the pay versions and you may have to hunt for the link to the free player.
